How does IPL work?
IPL works by safely transmitting light down into the hair follicles. It’s absorbed by a natural chemical in our body called melanin. The light converts into heat, thus damaging the hair follicles and helping prevent their regrowth. IPL is not a one-off treatment and must be carried out as a course to ensure you get the best results. This is because the majority of our hair is in the resting phase which is why you will always need more than one treatment.

Find out more about IPL hair removal

Is IPL really pain free?
Yes!  This is because when the light is transferred into heat, the freeze head system counteracts this process which means your treatment is completely and utterly pain free.

Is it for me?
IPL is suitable for most people with different hair and skin types, although unfortunately not for everyone. This is because IPL works with the pigment in your hair and melanin in your skin. This is why we offer you a free consultation.

How long does it take?
A treatment session can be from 10 minutes to over 1 hour dependent on the size of the area being treated. Generally, it’s a very quick procedure and you will be relaxed and put at ease throughout by our highly experienced beauty therapists.

How is it different from permanent hair reduction?
Permanent hair reduction treatment can often have good results but is time consuming, sometimes painful and an ongoing procedure. IPL is completely pain free, is suitable for not only small but larger areas and only requires a course with top-ups occasionally.

I’m interested, how can I find out more?
We offer a free consultation for everyone. If you are interested and would like to find out more, please do not hesitate to book in for your free consultation. In your consultation, we will offer you a free patch test in which you can experience how the treatment will feel. You can then start your treatment after 4 days from your patch test.
Laser Hair Removal
A large percentage of the population find the removal of body hair a challenge and unwanted daily struggle. The cost, effort mixed and success rates can lead to distress and low self-esteem. Laser hair reduction has been safely used for over 20 years. In practice a laser beam is focused at the base of the target structure (in this case the hair follicle). It is a safe, effective, and clinically proven method that works for all skin types. The principle upon which light based treatments work (the Selective Heating through the Absorption of Light) is known as: PHOTO–THERMO–LYSIS (Light – Heat – Destroy). This treatment allows the targeting of specific structures (a selective process). The treatment involves reaching a temperature of 70*C to ensure permanent denaturing of proteins (in this instance destroying the hair's capability to regrow).
At Stilo we use the Nd:YAG laser from Superbium which is considered the gold standard for hair removal.

Laser v Intense Pulsed Light

A common question is whether a customer should choose laser or IPL treatments. Both have been commercially available since the mid 1990's and both involve producing light energy, which is then absorbed and converted into heat to cause denaturing of the target. This is where the similarities end.

Laser is more effective and achieves much better results. Lasers are more precise in producing a single wavelength of light, which is then concentrated to a specific target. IPL produces a broad spectrum of light that cannot be focused at one specific target. With IPL the range of wavelengths produced means the energy is dispersed between them with only a few wavelengths reaching the intended target. With Laser all the energy is targeted in one wavelength at the target.

As laser is directed purely at the hair follicle there is much less risk of skin damage. This allows for the treatment of all skin types can be treated. With IPL being multi-directional only lighter skin types can be treated.

Why do I need a course of treatment if the hair follicle will be destroyed?

As with all cells the hair follicle has a growth cycle. In order for the hair to be permanently denatured it has to be treated in its growing stage. As the hair bulb cannot be seen below the skin its state of growth cannot be identified at the time of treatment. At any one time only 30% of the body's hair will be in the growth stage. A course of treatments is therefore needed to achieve a good reduction of hair growth.

Does it hurt?

No. Laser hair removal doesn't 'hurt' but there will be a feeling of slight heating in the area treated (sometimes described as a 'flick' of heat). Some areas can be more sensitive than others. A chiller is used for all treatments which reduce the heat sensation ensuring minimal discomfort. Some women may experience exaggerated skin sensitivity prior to and during their monthly period.

How often will I need to come for treatment?

This is dependent on the stage and area of treatment. The guidelines are approximately for face 4-6 weeks and body 6-8 weeks.

Why choose Stilo?

Experience, expertise and the very best equipment, all in a welcoming and relaxed environment.

What happens after a laser treatment?

Directly after treatment there might be some redness and a small amount of swelling. This usually dissipates within 1-24 hours. The area can feel quite warm and 'tingly' directly following treatment. The following is recommended for 24 hours post treatment:

  • No hot baths or showers – tepid only
  • No heat treatments i.e. saunas and steam rooms
  • No deodorant, perfumes or scented body lotions/creams
  • No swimming or Jacuzzis
  • No steam ironing or cooking over boiling saucepans

How should I prepare for treatment?

  • Do not use products containing retinol or strong AHA fruit acids prior to or during your hair removal treatment
  • Do not bleach or use depilatory creams for at least 1 week prior to treatment or perfumed/aromatherapy products for 24-48 hours before treatment
  • Avoid swimming in strong chlorinated water immediately before treatment
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing when attending the treatment
  • Keep the area clean and dry
  • Physical sunblock should be worn at all times on areas visible to sunlight (SPF 30)
  • Avoid sun exposure and sun beds for 4 weeks before treatment
  • Avoid use of irritants or stimulant solutions or creams on the area
  • Do not use any other form of hair removal except shaving during your treatment programme and shave no earlier than 2-4 days after treatment
  • Should area appear red or tender then apply recommended aftercare gel or apply ice or cooling gel packs which can improve comfort and reduce redness and swelling
  • Do not use fake tanning products for two weeks prior to treatments including spray tanning and tinted moisturisers

Carbon Laser Facial

An exciting new treatment that goes deep into your skin, targeting fine lines, wrinkles, spots and more, leaving you with an even complexion, reduced pore size and a deep cleansing, leaving your skin looking vibrant and fresh.

The carbon laser facial is a form of Photo Skin Rejuvenation which gives you glowing skin after only one treatment. It enhances the skins' radiance and promotes a smooth, clean, glowing, toned complexion. It will stimulate collagen fibre renewal in your skin helping to reduce wrinkles and pore size, and as carbon has a high absorption ability it can get deep into the pores and absorb dirt and impurities.

A course of three to six treatments is recommended for optimal and long lasting results, then a yearly top up to continue the benefits.

How does it work?

When performing the laser treatment, a layer of carbon paste is applied on the entire face and allowed to dry. Then, the fractional laser is used to heat and cause an implosion of the carbon particles. The laser light is absorbed by the carbon paste focusing the laser energy on the epidermis. As the laser moves across the skin the carbon paste is removed, exfoliating the skin and removing any debris in pores. The treatment minimises pore sizes and the thermal effect of the laser beam stimulates collagen renewal. The treatment is comfortable and only a minor sensation similar to pins and needles is felt.

How many treatments will I need?

A visible difference should be noticed with one individual treatment, but a course of 3 - 6 treatments with a break of around 2 weeks in between each (depending on your skin type or concerns) is advised for maximum results. After treatment your skin will be cleansed and a moisturising treatment applied. As the Carbon Laser Facial gives an instant improvement to skin tone and texture, some people like to have a single session to have great skin before a big event or night out.

What improvements will I see?

You will see a reduction in pore size, fine lines and blemishes. Your skin tone will be improved and rejuvenated giving a more youthful appearance. It is advised to stay away from excessive sun exposure during the treatment period. Make up can be applied after treatment. Aesthetic products for acne, hyper pigmentation, wrinkles etc. can be applied the following day.

There is no restriction of daily activities after the treatment. The skin is often slightly pink immediately after treatment, but this subsides after a few hours, and sunscreen may be applied immediately following treatment.

Laser Vein Removal/Reduction

Through the science of Nd:YAG laser technology we offer a non invasive solution for the removal of smaller vascular lesions including facial spider and thread veins, and leg veins under 4mm in diameter.

Spider veins can resemble a "star" with numerous small veins radiating from a central point, or they can also appear as fine, separate lines, a web-like maze, or as "branches" from a single "tree trunk." These red, blue or purple thread-like lines may develop on any part of the body, including the face, but most often appear on the thighs, calves, or buttocks. The condition is associated with increased pressure to the veins. The gold standard treatment for spider veins is laser.

Laser therapy for spider veins?

Laser vein removal is an easy, fast, and effective way to treat superficial veins. Laser therapy has been used in medicine for more than 30 years. Advances in technology have helped developed many different lasers. The laser uses a focused beam of light. In the treatment of veins, the wavelength of light is targeted to the pigment in the blood. The laser heats up the small vein and destroys it. The laser beam is focused and does not damage the nearby skin tissue. Over a period of four to six weeks, the vein is reabsorbed by the body and disappears.

What type of laser is used to treat spider veins?

At Stilo Hair & Beauty we use the Nd:YAG Laser. It has a specific hand held device which is designed to move across the area with ease.

How does the laser work?

The Nd:YAG laser pierces the skin and penetrates the superficial blood vessel. The heat generated from the laser coagulates the blood inside the vessel causing it to collapse and seal. Over the next few weeks, the vessel will disappear and all the blood will be removed by the body's lymphatic system. The newer laser treatments allow the delivery of a precise dosage of energy to each blood vessel without injuring any nearby structures.

How do I know if I am a candidate for laser vein treatment?

All individuals are evaluated prior to laser therapy. Spider veins do not cause symptoms and are of a cosmetic concern only. For those who have symptoms, further investigation is done to ensure that they do not have varicose veins. Laser therapy is most effective for the very small spider veins and not used to treat large varicose veins.

What preparations must I take?

There are no major preparations required before the laser treatment. A few common sense recommendations include avoiding sun exposure, aspirin, alcohol, and not smoke for at least a week prior to the procedure.

On the day of the treatment you should avoid all creams, lotions and moisturisers on the area that is going to be treated. You should wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the body part(s).

What happens during laser therapy?

The procedure is done in the privacy of our treatment rooms and usually takes less than 10-20 minutes.

In most cases, only the very small superficial veins are treated with a laser. The majority of individuals do not require any type of anaesthesia, but for those who are squeamish or anticipate pain, we can apply a topical anaesthetic 20 minutes prior to the procedure.

Is laser therapy painful?

During your treatment, you may feel a slight tingling sensation as the laser fires. If you are prone to feeling any pain a topical local anaesthetic can be applied 20 minutes before the procedure.

How will I feel after the laser therapy?

Soon after the procedure, you may feel a slight bump on the skin which will disappear in the next 2-4 hours. The area may also appear redder, with the possibility of bruising.

Are there any precautions after laser therapy?

After laser therapy, it is strongly recommended that you keep away from the sun. Healing can be facilitated by wearing support hose. The pain is minimal and one may take any over the counter pain medications. After treatment, there is no down time. You can resume all of your normal activities immediately afterward.

How often can I have laser therapy for spider veins?

It is generally recommended that the treatments be spaced four to six weeks apart. If new veins appear, additional treatments are required for optimum results.

What are side effects of laser therapy?

The skin above the veins will have a reddish, cat-scratch appearance. This generally disappears over the next few days.

When can I go back to work after laser therapy?

Clients are encouraged to resume all normal activities immediately. Final results may not be apparent for several months. Most patients are satisfied by the results in a very short time.

How long does it take for the results to become evident?

The results of laser treatment for spider veins are not immediate. After the laser therapy, the vessels underneath the skin will gradually change from a dark blue to light red colour, then eventually disappearing in two to six weeks. Most clients report a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure and relief at no longer having to hide unsightly veins. The treated areas are noticeably clearer and in most cases the skin continues to improve with each successive treatment. The majority of spider veins will disappear within two to four weeks, and in some cases longer.

What are potential complications of laser therapy?

The risks associated with laser vein therapy are minimal. Your eyes will be shielded during the treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

Depending on the size and number of veins, two to six treatments will be needed. The treatments are usually done 4-6 weeks apart. Those with a tendency towards vascular problems will most likely require additional treatments.

Are spider veins bad for health?

Spider veins are always superficial to the skin and much smaller than varicose veins. Because spider veins are dark and superficial to the skin, some people dislike the appearance of them.

One thing to note about these veins is that they are harmless and not associated with any symptoms, and are only of a cosmetic concern. While we do not have a cure for spider veins, one can protect against them by wearing support hose and maintaining a normal weight.

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins are typically caused by abnormal blood flow and weakening of the blood vessel wall. Any condition or activity that places pressure on the veins (like weight gain, prolonged sitting or standing) can contribute to their development.

Spider veins increase with age and thus are quite common in the elderly. There is also a genetic basis, since spider veins do tend to run in families. In pregnancy, spider veins are quite common and have been associated with an increase in the female sex hormone estrogen. Estrogen is known to weaken the walls of the veins and may contribute to the development of spider veins. During pregnancy, spider veins are most common in the 2nd trimester.

Do spider veins disappear on their own?

Unfortunately no; spider veins once developed generally get worse and do not resolve on their own. Weight gain, lack of exercise and a sedentary life style is associated with progression of spider veins.

Laser Tattoo Removal

A tattoo may seem like a good idea at the time, but you may regret the decision later on. Over 20% of British adults reportedly have tattoos, rising to almost 30% among those aged 16-44. Recent studies have revealed that one third of tattooed adults regretted their tattoo.

At Stilo we used the Q Switched Nd:YAG laser which is one of the most effective treatments for removing tattoos without any scarring from the laser. During tattoo removal photons of light are selectively absorbed by the ink, and this sudden increase in temperature causes the ink to shatter. The body’s own immune system removes the shattered pigment via the lymphatic system. Most amateur tattoos can be removed in 3 to 4 sessions and professional tattoos take 6 to 12 treatments.

Please note that we cannot remove some colours such as red, orange and some greens. The Q switched Nd:Yag 1064nm for the removal of black, dark blue, white, grey and brown ink.

Laser Nail Fungi Treatment

What is Fungal Nail Disease?

Fungal nail disease, medically referred to as onychomycosis, affects a significant number of the adult population. Fungi that feed on keratin, a structural protein within your nails, frequently cause the condition. Fungal colonies proliferate in moist environments and invade the nail bed by penetrating the margins of the nail. Fungal nail disease may result in pain, impair the ability to walk and contribute to a negative self image.

Some prescription medications have side effects and therefore are not always the best treatment option. Another option is surgery to remove the nail; this is not a popular option either. Laser therapy to treat the disease is gaining popularity as a means to achieve a temporary increase in clear nail.

Is the Treatment Painful?

During the Nail Fungus Laser Treatment, a laser beam will be slowly directed across the nail bed. The laser beam will generate heat beneath the nail and within the underlying fungal colony. You will feel a warm sensation during the procedure which lasts 1 minute to 2 minutes per toenail.

There may be a slight pain sensation as a result of the heating effect of the laser treatment.

How soon will I have Clear Nails?

You will not see a result immediately, but rather over a period of months as the nail resumes healthy growth. Nails grow slowly, so you may not see a significant improvement for several months, but you should see a gradual growth of clear nail.

Will I need more than one Treatment?

Additional treatments may be recommended depending on the severity of the fungal infection. Your podiatrist will talk with you about the possibility of having additional treatments and will also advise you on the proper care of your nails to minimize the risk of recurrence.

What else do I need to know?

  • The procedure is safe
  • No anesthesia is required
  • There are no side effects
  • There is no visible harm to the treated nail or adjacent skin
  • Socks and shoes can be worn immediately after the procedure
  • Nail polish can be applied after treatment
  • There is no "recovery“ period after the procedure
